Useful answers about risk assessments, safety documents and working with PASS.
Risk assessments and documents
What is the difference between a risk assessment and a method statement?
A risk assessment identifies hazards and the controls needed. A method statement describes how a task will be carried out, including its sequence and precautions. The documents should work together. Read HSE's guidance on procedures.
Do I need to write down my risk assessment?
If you employ five or more people, you must record the significant findings. Recording them can also help smaller businesses communicate and review their arrangements. Read HSE's risk assessment guidance.
Can I use a generic template?
A template can provide a useful structure, but it must be adapted to the actual activities, hazards and controls at your workplace. Discuss your existing documents with Paul.
When should risk assessments be reviewed?
Review assessments regularly and when circumstances change. Changes to equipment, substances or working practices, or evidence that controls are not working, can mean a review is needed. Read HSE's review guidance.
Is a safety data sheet the same as a COSHH assessment?
No. A safety data sheet provides information about a chemical product. A COSHH assessment considers the risks arising from its use at work and the precautions needed. Read HSE's safety data sheet guidance.
Working with PASS
Can PASS help with documents we already have?
Speak to Paul about your existing assessments, policies or forms and what has changed. The scope of any review or update can be agreed around your requirements.
Will a workplace visit be needed?
This depends on the work and the information available. Paul can discuss whether a visit is needed to understand the activities and working environment before agreeing the support.
Does having the paperwork mean everything is compliant?
Documents are only part of managing safety. The precautions must be appropriate, put into practice, communicated and reviewed. PASS does not offer a blanket guarantee of compliance.
Is PASS accredited?
No. PASS is not accredited. If your client or site requires a particular accreditation, discuss that requirement with Paul before booking.
How much does documentation support cost?
The cost depends on the activities, number of documents and level of support required. Send a brief description of the work, your location and any deadlines to request a tailored quote.
